SO LONG SUMMER
As summer winds down, I’m already missing the fun in the sun. If you’re a beach enthusiast like me, the heat, travel and salt have taken their toll on your hair, too. Mine was visibly dull and rough in texture. My dry split ends were obvious, and I had frizzies all over. This year more than ever, I needed to know how to repair summer hair at home.
HAIRCARE EVERYWHERE
First and foremost, I desperately need something to repair the damage summer elements have done. Of course, I also want the best products for my day-to-day routines. However, it is definitely overwhelming seeing hundreds of brands and options on the shelves.
DID MY HOMEWORK
I had no idea where to start, so to begin my research on hair recondition and maintenance, I spoke with several hairdressers – including my favorite – about how to repair summer hair. Also, I consulted with lots of people at salon-type stores such as Ulta. Now, I’m thrilled to say that I have FINALLY resolved my hair nightmare issues with a few “game-changing” products. Here are the recommendations…
CUT TO THE CHASE
After a good cut, I found a shampoo and conditioner that work together to reconstruct the hair. My favorite combination begins with Klorane Nourishing Shampoo with Mango Butter. Not only does it gently cleanse my hair and scalp, but it nourishes without weighing it down. It provides much-needed hydration, so my hair is more manageable. No harmful sulfates, either. Plus, there’s one more reason I love this product as I repair my summer hair; I am obsessed with the fabulous mango scent!
IT’S A BLAST
Along with this shampoo, I recommend Klorane Nourishing Conditioner. It blasts a surge of moisture to replace what the elements have depleted. I’m pleased that it is sulfate and paraben-free, vegan, and biodegradable, too. My hair will no longer feel dry, and once again, I’ll love how soft and shiny it is.
SANDY TO THE RESCUE
One of the first experts I consulted, Sandy, is my personal stylist. She’s my main source as she is extremely knowledgeable and talented, and also because she is so familiar with my hair. She recommended a hair mask to kick-start my hair repair and a leave-in conditioner as a boost.
MAGIC POTION
At the top of the repair list is Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. Sandy claims it to be the deepest hair repair possible in a home product. Thankfully, it works on all types of hair, and happily, no more despair over bad “beach” hair. This reparative mask adds moisture and leaves hair noticeably smooth and shiny. It is suggested for weekly use to build more resilience.
WAIT, THERE’S MORE
Another Olaplex product made the list – Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo. Because it is so rich with moisturizers, it repairs and strengthens your hair as it cleans. Hair is fuller and less frizzy. It tames split ends and leaves hair feeling fabulous.
YES, WAY
The next endorsement goes to Ouai (pronounced “way”) Hair Oil. It is lightweight and leaves a glossy sheen. Key ingredients include Galanga Root Extract, Ama Oil, and Borage Oil. Galanga Root helps protect hair fibers from color fading when exposed to UV rays. Ama Oil is a combination of Sunflower Oil and Amaranth Seed Extract, which strengthens hair and blocks humidity. And Borage Oil is full of nutrients that smooth out the frizz. A small amount delivers a large amount of protection, so I just mix it in with my leave-in conditioner before styling. s a bonus, it can be left on overnight as a super-intensive hydrating mask.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Because I live in Texas, it’s not just the sun that causes damage. We have extremely high humidity all summer long. My walking routine also has me outside and of course, we love our football games too. So, for year-round “extra” haircare, I love It’s a 10 products. The shampoo protects your color and shields against heat and environmental damage. The It’s a 10 Deep Conditioner with Keratin smooths and protects hair cuticles against damage from heat and the sun. Aloe Vera and other natural ingredients leave your hair feeling soft and luxurious.
WHIP IT GOOD
Probably the biggest game-changer for me has been Sebastian’s Light Conditioner Style Whipped Crème. Besides sounding so yummy, it’s thick, creamy, and full of protein. I use it regularly – often daily – because I want silky and soft results, not dry or crunchy. It’s a favorite for sure.
WASH AND WEAR
Next, and earning an “honorable mention”, is Aveda’s Be Curly Enhancer. Although I don’t go “au natural” very often, sometimes I just need a quick style, or what I call my “wash and wear” hair. It smooths your hair without weighing it down. This tames frizzies, adds shine, and you’re good to go.
TOP IT OFF
Above, I’ve shared my favorites in terms of moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, but there are two additional hair care products that we consider “must haves.” Until recently, I had never tried a bamboo hair towel wrap. I’d heard of them, but to be honest, wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about. Now, it’s a daily habit. They are much softer and smoother than a cotton towel, and they don’t pull on the strands of your hair as much.
BRUSH IT OFF
Additionally, because wet hair – even healthy hair – is delicate when washed, a detangling brush makes a big difference. One that’s made with soft, silicone bristles specifically for wet hair is far less stressful on the ends. Less stress equals less breakage, and that’s crucial.
NIGHTS ON WHITE SATIN
Furthermore, as my “How to Repair Summer Hair” process is well under way, it is important to remember those daily finishing touches that can also cause brittleness and breakage. Some gels can be drying, and I’ll forgo the hairspray for a short while. The hardest part for many women is to briefly refrain from using their flat irons. Also, no more ponies using tight or elastic hair bands which can cause permanent damage, especially near the nape of the neck.
STELLA!
Stella, at Ulta, recommended Scrunchies made of soft fabric to protect the elasticity of the hair strands. And I’m so grateful Sandy recommended my satin pillow case to avoid friction. I’ve even been able to get up and only need to “fluff” my hair. The Blissy helped hold my style overnight and that’s a definite game-changer for me!
JUST ONE MORE DAY…
Lastly and just in case, I never leave home without my wide-brimmed hat. The UV rays in particular fade hair color quickly (and it goes with everything.) After all, nothing should get in the way of a good beach day!
